and better continous contact with track surface? These are two pros that Luke of Tirerack posted a while back over 18" wheels. I don't necessarily disagree with him, but he didn't provide an explanation. I am under the impression that for road racing you want the widest possible tire with the least amount of sidewall, but if you sound like you know what you're talking about I could easily be disabused of this notion. Just to add, 17's and 18's you can pretty much get in the same width up to the point of not fitting, you can get 18's that are almost as light as 17's (thinking Volk), you can get 18" tires in various diameters, bigger or smaller than some 17's.
